Anahata: The Fourth Chakra - Heart Chakra Color, Location, & stone

As its name suggests, the heart chakra is located squarely in the center of the chest. As you may expect, it supports the ideas of love, compassion, and forgiveness. A highly functioning heart chakra can help an individual to intimately connect with others and form real, lasting relationships both romantically and platonically.

Although red is often associated with the heart and concept of love, the heart chakra is actually represented by the color green. This green is most often a rich emerald or grass-colored green. The Sanskrit name for this particular chakra is Anahata; Anahata translates most closely to mean “unstruck sound”. This translation speaks to the unspoken words of the heart; those things individuals keep close to themselves. By learning to speak such words and truths, an individual can become empowered and strengthen this chakra tremendously.
The heart chakra is depicted with a six-pointed star surrounded by twelve petals. Its position in the center of the chest allows energy to radiate outwards into the word and inwards to strengthen the individual’s core. The mode of the heart chakra is love and balance; its state is profound love. The action associated with this particular chakra is “I love and am loved”. Repeating this phrase and living this action through deeds balances and strengthens the heart chakra.

A fully functioning heart chakra allows an individual to tap into limitless compassion and love. Mother Teresa’s life exemplifies a life lived with a perfectly functioning heart chakra. Several aspects can help to balance and strengthen the heart chakra. Specific sounds can be especially helpful. The musical note of F can help energy flow more freely in this chakra. The mantra of “Yam” additionally creates the ideal vibrations for assisting this particular chakra. Chakra experts also recommend the sound of “sa” to help open the heart.

During meditation or focused chakra sessions, the smell of rose may assist the heart chakra in opening. Aromas may be released into the air or worn on the body in the form of perfumes or essential oils. Chakra experts additionally recommend several other scents including jasmine, lavender, and meadowsweet. Essential oils should always be diluted before being applied to the skin; almond is an excellent, gentle carrier oil perfect for this purpose.

Several gemstones may additionally be useful in helping to increase the energy flow through the heart chakra. Chakra practitioners recommend two green stones including emerald and jade. Finally, air is the element associated with this chakra.

A highly functioning heart chakra can create feelings of unconditional love, compassion, and forgiveness. If the heart chakra is blocked, then emotional issues such as anger and meanness may result. Such anger is often quick to rise and hard to let go. An inability to forgive can result in long-lasting grudges that drain a person emotionally and physically. Physical issues may result as well from a blocked heart chakra; such issues may include heart ailments, breathing issues, and blood diseases among others.

Working to strengthen the heart chakra often results in achieving a state of compassion—both compassion for oneself and compassion of others. To achieve a clear and highly functioning heart chakra, the actions of loving oneself and others, sharing resources, and donating time and/or material goods can dramatically help. Bhakti yoga is also an excellent resource to help balance the heart chakra. Yoga poses such as cobra, camel, and locust, all which focus on opening the chest area are ideal to incorporate in a daily practice.

Finally, the natural world can also help to open the heart chakra. Hiking through pristine forests or other natural areas or enjoying a flower garden can support a highly functioning heart chakra.
