Natural Ways To Treat Sinusitis | Home Remedies & Cures For Sinus Infections

Also known as sinusitis, a sinus infection occurs when there is inflammation in the tissue linings located in the sinuses. It is normal and healthy for the sinuses to have air but when they become blocked and filled with germs as well as bacteria, this can lead to a painful infection and inflammation. Common causes of sinusitis include colds, nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis, or deviated septums.

Sinusitis may be acute, subacute, chronic, or recurrent; it can occur to anyone at least once in their lifetime. Symptoms of a sinus infection include pressure or pain in the facial area, loss of smell, congestion, coughs, or nasal discharge/stuffiness. In addition, these symptoms may also be accompanied by a fever, dental pain, fatigue, and bad breath.

There are many natural remedies that can effectively treat sinus infections:

Drink lots of liquids that are free from added sugars such as hot tea and water. Doing so will enable mucus to be thinned out, so that it is easier to drain from sinuses. Staying hydrated until you are completely healed from sinusitis is crucial in expelling all the clogged up bacteria.

Steam inhalation with a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil in hot water is effective in breaking down thick mucus. You can also use a humidifier for the same purpose.

Grapefruit seed extracts are a great natural remedy for sinus infections. Dried grapefruit seed extracts that are manufactured into a spray is a good way to expel mucus while preventing contaminants from staying in your already inflamed sinus tissues.

Bromelain, a protein from pineapples, is sold in supplement form and is valued for its ability to decrease swelling especially in the nasal passage. But before you decide to take bromelain, be sure to ask your physician first as it may counteract with other medications or supplements that you are already taking.

Add three tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar into hot water and drink three times daily. This will help to effectively flush out mucus while reliving congestion and pressure in the sinus cavities. You can also add honey and lemon to the apple cider vinegar tea for added taste.

A few drops of pure, raw oregano essential oil in a cup of water is an excellent natural remedy for sinusitis. Oregano oil is a potent antiviral, antifungal, and antibiotic and will be able to speed up healing from sinusitis while boosting your immune system. Oregano essential oil can also be inhaled directly if you enjoy its scent.

Turmeric root already contains curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory chemical that is used for its pain relieving properties. Make a hot tea by combining turmeric root with ginger; the result is a potent drink that will successfully eliminate mucus from your clogged nasal airways. The turmeric-ginger tea is also helpful in strengthening the immune system while reducing sinus pressure and can also calm an upset stomach which can occur due to extreme nasal drainage.
