The Basics of Law of Attaction

The Law of Attraction is part of the New Thought movement which was started by Phineas Quimby during the 19th century. He never used the actual words “Law of Attraction” although the foundations were very similar and he used them only to apply to health. The term “law of attraction” first appeared in a publication in 1877, in a book authored by Helena Blavatsky. Towards the end of the 19th century, the term began to gain popularity and was used by Ralph Trine and Prentice Mulford, who were New Thought authors at the time. During the 20th century, New Thought began to receive more popularity as more people began to write about it. As it began to develop over the decades, it resulted in a stream of New Thought ideas although the Law of Attraction still remains a primary philosophical concept. The Law of Attraction is also rooted in many religious and philosophical traditions. It is largely inspired by Hinduism, Hermeticism, Bible verses, and New England transcendentalism. However it was only through the documentary and book entitled The Secret which catapulted the Law of Attraction into recent popularity. Authored by Rhonda Byrne, the book was released in 2006 and became a best-selling hit that has been read and followed by millions until today.

The Premise of The Law of Attraction

The Law of Attraction is best known for the saying “like attracts like” which sums up the idea that positive thinking will attract positive situations, while negative thinking will attract negative experiences. It is based on the idea that thoughts and people are made up of energy, which is why energy will attract energy. One of the fundamental principles of the Law Of Attraction places importance on where you focus your thoughts. For example, if you focus or worry about getting sick, then you will get sick; but if you focus on abundance and health, these will make their way into your life.

The Law of Attraction teaches that you have the power and the freedom to shape your future. In order for more positive experiences to happen in your life, the Law of Attraction provides tool and strategies to attract more of what you want. Practicing the Law of Attraction can be done throughout the day, particularly starting by being more mindful of your own thoughts as this will help you determine what kind of thinking you should dismiss and what you should be focusing on. Paying attention to where your thoughts can provide valuable insight on any negativity that you may not even be aware of. Constant self-reflection is useful in helping you determine how you want your future to be shaped, so that you can start taking action and develop actionable goals.

Steps to Applying the Law of Attraction

The secret to using the law of attraction is to begin becoming consciously aware of your thoughts. According to this concept, it is not only what a person does, but what a person thinks about that can influence the experiences a person has. There are three core aspects to applying the law of attraction into your life: desire, belief, and gratitude. Let’s take a look at how each of these aspects works to create a more fulfilling life.

Desire: An individual needs to properly identify his or her desires. Many people choose to create a vision board, which is a collection of pictures displayed in a prominent place in the home to act as a daily reminder of what is worth working for on a daily basis. The vision board may be hand-drawn pictures, images cut from magazines, or printed words. But clearly identifying what it is an individual desires is the first step to applying the law of attraction.

Belief: After identifying what is most desired, the next step is to believe that you deserve your desires. You need to consciously think about the desire in your life: see it before it actually arrives. Believe that you will have it. This belief is key because it not only sends out your desire into the universe, but it also reminds your brain what you want. Once your brain has a clear message, it can begin making clear decisions to help you on the path to obtaining what you greatly desire.

Gratitude: This last step is key! Once a person attains their desire, he or she should be thankful for it. Remaining positive and thanking not only the universe, but the people who helped realize the desire (including oneself) is a vital stage in this process. Failing to truly feel gratitude allows one to slip back into negativity, which can result in unwanted consequences.

A Few Principles of the Law of Attraction

Practicing the law of attraction requires a disciplined and positive mindset. Indeed, an individual needs a heightened awareness not only of himself or herself, but of the world in general. Manifesting a desire takes time, patience, and energy; a person must set aside time each day to mindfully meditate on the desire and actively work towards achieving it throughout the day. Several principles can help in achieving what a person desires. Let’s take a look at three of the most important principles below.

Principle 1: Be aware of your thoughts all the time. Avoid thinking about what you don’t want, and begin thinking about what you do want. For example, I don’t want to be late to work today could be replaced with I will be on time to work today. According to the law of attraction, thoughts possess a powerful energy and can be manifested into a reality; therefore, all thoughts should be positive and focus on what you desire in life and not what you never want. Giving a voice to what you don’t want gives that thought power; therefore, all thoughts should always be of what you do want.

Principle 2: Thoughts can influence feelings. This law believes that the types of thoughts an individual has directly impacts the feelings an individual experiences. Therefore, it’s of utmost importance to engage in positive thinking. Negative thoughts will lead to feelings of fear, anger, and depression among others while positive thoughts create feelings of happiness, gratitude, joy, and hope.

Principle 3: Rewire the brain for positivity. While this process may take a bit of time, it’s of paramount importance to phrase things positively. The power of positivity can truly change the lives of those who believe in it. Words denoting negatively such as can’t, won’t, don’t, shouldn’t, couldn’t, wouldn’t, never, not, and no send out negativity into the universe. Such words should be replaced with can, will, do, always, and yes.

Finally, a key part of achieving the power of the law of attraction is speaking to others about your desire and building a network that can help you achieve your goal. People have always been more powerful when they work as a team; therefore, on the quest to achieve important desires, speak to your network of friends, family, and colleagues and allow them to help you help yourself. Remember: no one will believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself. There is no better time than now to start!
